Getting Ready for Swimming Season: Pool Preparation 101

As the summer draws near, most homeowners have already tackled their spring cleaning to-do list. Closets are organized, windows are sparkling, and the yard is ready for backyard lounging. But if you own a pool, there's a good chance a few key tasks have slipped through the cracks. Late spring is the perfect time to double-check that your home — and especially your pool — is truly ready for the months ahead.

Here are the often-overlooked tasks that every pool owner should attend to before the heat really hits:

1. Clean and Inspect Pool Filters

Whether you have a sand, cartridge, or DE filter, a thorough cleaning is essential after a long winter. Even if your pool has been covered, debris, algae, and oils can build up. Clogged filters reduce water circulation and strain your pump. Clean or replace your filter now to avoid issues during peak season.

2. Scrub the Pool Walls and Tile Line

While regular skimming and vacuuming are part of weekly pool maintenance, many homeowners often overlook the need to deep-clean the tile line and walls in the spring. Use a pool brush and a tile-safe cleaner to remove calcium deposits, algae, and grime. Pay special attention to corners and stairs where buildup tends to accumulate.

3. Inspect and Clean Pool Toys and Equipment

That bin of inflatables, goggles, and floaties? It needs love, too. Wash pool toys with a mild soap solution and rinse them thoroughly to remove mold, mildew, and bacteria. Also, check for cracks or leaks in hoses, skimmer baskets, and pool vacuums. Replace anything that's worn out before it fails mid-season.

4. Power Wash Pool Deck and Outdoor Surfaces

Your pool isn't the only thing that needs a refresh. Pool decks, patios, and walkways often collect mildew, pollen, and dirt over the spring. A quick power wash can make your entire outdoor space feel clean and new again — plus, it helps prevent slips and falls on slippery surfaces.

5. Don't Forget the Pool Cover

If you use a winter pool cover, give it a thorough rinse and allow it to dry completely before folding and storing it. Mold and mildew can form if it's stored in a damp place. This small step will extend its life and ensure it's ready to go when you need it again in the fall.

6. Test and Balance the Water Chemistry

Even if your water looks crystal clear, now is the time to test and balance your pool chemistry. Unbalanced water can damage your equipment and irritate swimmers' skin and eyes. Check chlorine levels, pH, alkalinity, and stabilizer to ensure a successful start to the season.

It's easy to forget these tasks in the excitement of pool season, but adding them to your annual calendar ensures your pool stays clean, safe, and fun all summer long. With a little extra effort now, you'll spend more time relaxing — and less time troubleshooting — when the heat is on.
