Tips For Redesigning Your Living Room

Whether you primarily use it for watching television, playing with your children (or grandchildren), or just relaxing and lounging on the sofa, the living room is one of the most essential rooms in your home. Therefore, you and your family need to be comfortable in the space, which means enjoying both the look and feel of it.

If you aren't finding that your living room is providing you optimal comfort — or simply don't like its current aesthetic — it's time for a redesign! While it might at first thought sound like a lot of work, the process can be quite simple when following these tips.

1. Define Your Style
Look for inspiration online through platforms like Pinterest and Instagram, then choose a style that feels right for you. When considering the style, try not to just pick what you like but also what matches the rest of the home for a cohesive look. It's not a big deal to go a little bit more modern than the rest of your home, but do your best to match the overall aesthetic so it doesn't feel out of place.

2. Plan Your Layout
Before determining the layout, think about what functions your living room serves first and foremost. For instance, is it mostly for watching TV, reading a book, or entertaining? You can then arrange the furniture accordingly. Aside from optimizing the space for specific activities, you will want to lay your furniture out in a way that allows for natural traffic flow.

3. Choose a Color Scheme
The next step in the design process is to choose a color scheme. Start by selecting a neutral base color such as beige, gray, or off-white to use for the walls and large furniture. After that, choose some accent colors that can be incorporated through accessories such as pillows, rugs, and wall art.

4. Add Furniture and Functional Accessories
Once you have selected the color scheme for the space, you can finally move on to choosing your furniture and accessories. When looking for furniture, consider functionality, comfort, and durability. Your accessories should be both visually pleasing and functional. For example, add an abundance of cool contemporary shelving that brings life to the room while assisting with storage organization. Ottomans and coffee tables with drawers are also great ways to increase storage and functionality in your living room.

5. Mix Materials and Textures
With your furniture, it's best to mix various materials and textures to add interest and depth to the space. Incorporate a mix of wood, glass, metal, and textiles and balance soft and hard elements such as pairing a plush sofa with a sleek coffee table and leather chair.

6. Incorporate Strategic Lighting
Add multiple layers of lighting by using a mix of lighting sources such as ambient, task, and accent lighting. You can eliminate the need for excess lighting by maximizing natural light coming through by using adjustable sheer blinds or curtains and incorporating mirrors that reflect the light from outside into your design.

By carefully following these steps, you can create a brand-new living space you'll love. For further help with the process, ask your agent for recommendations for local interior decorators, designers, or contractors. Your agent may even be able to recommend the best places to buy quality, budget-friendly furniture nearby or online.
